Noah left David alone after a few more questions. David’s new quarters were a quantum leap in comfort, but the two guards posted outside meant he had just swapped one kind of prison cell for another. The same woman who had brought his cookies returned with an evening meal. David tried to engage her in conversation, but she must have been under orders not to talk to him as she said nothing apart from polite greetings and telling him what the chef had prepared. She did however leave him with a plate of cookies for dessert. “I hear you like these,” she said with a smile.

Then he slept. As with food, in situations like this David believed in taking opportunities when they presented themselves. It didn’t stop his thoughts of Oliver, or Elizabeth, or of how he could get out of here and get their rescue mission back on track.

The same woman brought him a breakfast of ham and eggs the next morning. After a good meal, a shower and a shave David felt ready for anything.

Noah collected him an hour later and escorted him to a waiting transport.

“How’s Oliver?” were the first words out of David’s mouth.

“In the ICU,” Noah answered. David saw the concern in his eyes. “He had surgery last night. His doctors think he’ll pull through, but his condition is serious.” He hesitated. “Your medical kit got them stirred up.”

“It did?”

Noah nodded. “Things in there none of them have ever seen before. They want to know if I can get them more.” He left the statement hanging, almost a question.

David nodded. “It’s possible. Are they using them on Oliver?”

Noah snorted. “You better believe it. They couldn’t wait to try those fancy dressings and new drugs they found in there.” He shot David a curious look. “They said something about universal artificial blood with a five-year shelf life. How is that even possible?”

David felt his shoulders relax. In the back of his mind he’d worried about how far the level of medical care had regressed and imagined surgery without antiseptics and anesthetic.

“And John?”

“Ah, your Australian friend. He’s—unlike anyone I’ve ever met.”

“He can be forthright.”

Noah laughed. “That’s an understatement.” His smile faded. “Your friend’s safe, but it’s best if we leave him out of our next discussion.”

“Because?”

Noah paused. “Because this meeting is with the President.”

David’s interest quickened. He hadn’t expected this, at least not so soon. If he could convince the man at the top, their problems might be over real quick.

“Who is he?”

Noah straightened the sleeves of his uniform jacket. “His name is Howard Drake.”

David’s mind whirled. “Republican or Democrat?”

Noah’s eyes widened. “Maybe your story really is true.”

David blinked. “Was that a dumb question?”

Noah smiled. “It’s a question that hasn’t been relevant for over a hundred years. The only reason I know what you’re talking about is because I know something of the history of our great nation. The old Republican and Democrat parties died with the war.” His eyes became distant. “You have to understand, chaos reigned afterward.
